Designed to offer deeper contextual awareness and elevated personal health tracking, the new smartwatch directly targets high-performance rivals across the wearable space while expanding Apple’s silicon-driven ecosystem.

The headline feature of the Series 12 is Audio Intelligence, an opt-in system designed to monitor and process surrounding conversations in real time. Key functionality includes Live Rewind, which allows wearers to double-tap the Digital Crown to instantly generate a written transcript of the previous 15 seconds of spoken audio. Following a conversation, users can prompt Siri to synthesize the interaction into a concise executive summary. To address potential privacy concerns, Apple stresses that audio processing occurs strictly within an isolated secure enclave on the device, with data immediately erased after processing. Sensitive information is filtered out, and raw audio is never permanently stored. The feature is scheduled for release later in the year for non-EU markets and requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or newer.
Beyond conversation tracking, the background listening architecture serves ambient utility and accessibility needs. The system continuously listens for critical environmental sounds, such as doorbells, emergency sirens, alarms, or crying infants, to deliver immediate haptic and visual alerts to hearing-impaired users. Furthermore, integrated Shazam functionality operates continuously in the background, automatically identifying ambient music playing in the wearer’s immediate vicinity without manual activation.
Health and fitness capabilities receive a major physical upgrade through a redesigned sensor platform shared with the Apple Watch Ultra Series 4. The updated array incorporates larger electrodes for improved skin contact during ECG readings, expanded photodiodes within the photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, and larger, highly power-efficient LEDs. These hardware refinements significantly improve optical heart rate accuracy and allow the Series 12 to measure heart rate metrics every five seconds and heart rate variability every five minutes.
