Apple has expanded its smart home lineup with the launch of the HomePod mini 2. While maintaining the spherical, fabric-wrapped design of its 2020 predecessor, the second-generation compact speaker introduces upgraded audio features, enhanced ecosystem integration, and refreshed aesthetics, alongside a price increase to $149 (approx. R2,600).

The HomePod mini 2 introduces several exclusive audio-visual upgrades. A new feature called Sound Glow dynamic lighting projects colours onto the top touch panel that mimic the album artwork of active music tracks or display ambient light patterns, such as ocean waves or falling rain, when playing background soundscapes.
Integration within the Apple ecosystem receives a notable boost. Users can now establish persistent stereo pairs with any Mac or MacBook over AirPlay, maintaining the connection until manually changed. For home theatre setups, Apple has expanded its TV audio capabilities: users can configure up to four HomePod mini 2 units (or a hybrid setup combining full-sized second-generation HomePods and mini speakers) as a surround sound array with the new Apple TV 4K, doubling the previous two-speaker limit.
The HomePod mini 2 retains the original Midnight and White finishes while introducing three new colourways: Blue, Green, and Pink. The vibrant Pink option is styled to complement the current iMac lineup, while the refreshed mesh fabric continues to provide a seamless acoustic exterior.
A primary talking point surrounding the release is the pending status of Apple’s next-generation Siri AI capabilities. While the hardware supports the upgraded, context-aware voice assistant, Apple confirmed that Siri AI will not be active at launch, with a firm release timeline yet to be announced.
Pre-orders for the HomePod mini 2 opened today, with general retail availability scheduled for 30 October. Official South African pricing and local store availability from authorized reseller channels will be confirmed closer to launch.
