Apple debuts the MacBook Neo, an aggressive Chromebook competitor

Apple has significantly expanded its laptop roster with the announcement of the MacBook Neo, an entry-level machine designed to compete directly in the budget market dominated by Chromebooks and low-cost Windows PCs. Starting at just $599, and dropping to $499 for educational customers, this is officially the most affordable laptop Apple has ever produced.

The MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip, the same silicon that debuted in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. Equipped with a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine, the device is built to handle Apple Intelligence features within the macOS Tahoe environment. Despite the mobile-derived architecture, Apple promises impressive longevity, rating the laptop for up to 16 hours of battery life on a single charge.

In terms of raw performance, Apple claims the Neo is up to 50 percent faster at daily tasks than the best-selling PC equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor. Furthermore, when tackling on-device AI workloads—such as applying complex photographic effects—Apple asserts the Neo can perform up to three times faster than that same Windows equivalent.

The machine features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, capable of 500 nits of brightness and support for 1 billion colours. Connectivity includes a USB-C 3 port, a USB-C 2 port, and a standard headphone jack, though notably, the device omits the MagSafe charging connector. For audio and video, users get a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, dual microphones, and side-firing speakers with support for Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos.

While the base model includes 8GB of unified memory and 256GB of storage, Apple is offering a tiered upgrade: for an additional $100, users can add a TouchID sensor and upgrade their storage to 512GB.

Moving away from the traditional industrial palette, the MacBook Neo is available in four vibrant colours: Silver, Blush (light pink), Citrus (light yellow), and Indigo. Reflecting Apple’s commitment to its environmental goals, the laptop is housed in a durable recycled aluminium enclosure that reaches 60 percent recycled content by weight, making it the most sustainable device in Apple’s current hardware lineup.

Following its announcement on Wednesday, March 4, the MacBook Neo is available for pre-order immediately. The laptop will arrive in stores across 30 countries and regions on March 11, 2026. Early hands-on reports from the tech press have been generally positive, though some reviewers noted that the keyboard and trackpad lack the premium, sturdy feel found on Apple’s higher-end MacBook Pro and Air lines.
