Apple, which has fallen behind in the AI chatbot race, may be planning to develop its own in-house rival to ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple formed a new team called “Answers, Knowledge and Information” earlier this year, with the goal of creating a “stripped-down rival to ChatGPT.”

This initiative marks a significant shift from Apple’s previous strategy. Last year, the company partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri rather than developing its own chatbot. Now, Gurman reports that the new team is focused on building an in-house AI service capable of crawling the web to answer user questions. These new capabilities could power a standalone app and enhance AI features in Siri, Spotlight, and Safari. The team is reportedly led by Robby Walker, a former head of Siri, and is actively recruiting for roles that require experience in search algorithms and engine development.
This development comes as Apple faces some challenges in its AI efforts. Earlier this year, the company announced it would delay the release of its new and improved Siri, promising a rollout “in the coming year.” However, Apple appears committed to accelerating its Apple Intelligence program to remain competitive. During a recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook stated that Apple is “open to acquisitions” to fast-track its AI roadmap.
