YouTube Shorts will soon incorporate Veo 3, YouTube’s advanced AI video generation model, later this year. This announcement came from YouTube CEO Neal Mohan during a keynote at Cannes Lions.

Currently, Shorts creators can utilize the previous-generation Veo 2 model for features like generating backgrounds with Dream Screen and creating standalone video clips. While Mohan didn’t specify the exact capabilities Veo 3 will bring to Shorts, he did highlight its improved video quality and ability to incorporate audio, suggesting these enhancements will be available to creators.
It remains unconfirmed whether Shorts creators will need to pay to use Veo 3. Presently, generating Veo 3 videos outside of Shorts requires a paid subscription to Google’s AI Pro or AI Ultra plans. Google has not yet commented on the pricing structure for Veo 3 within Shorts.
In other news, Mohan also announced that YouTube Shorts are now averaging over 200 billion views per day, underscoring the platform’s massive reach and engagement.
