X sunsets legacy revenue sharing, launches Content Rewards Programme

X has stopped accepting applications for its legacy ad revenue-sharing system and will shut down the programme entirely after September 7. Replacing it is the new Original Content Rewards Programme, which compensates creators based on qualified impressions generated by authentic, original posts.

Eligible content includes primary reporting, original writing, custom photography, original video, memes, and illustrations. While creators can still monetize posts featuring third-party media, X now strictly requires transformative value, such as substantive analysis, meaningful commentary, or creative editing. Reposted content featuring basic captions or simple descriptive text overlays will no longer qualify for payouts.

To qualify for the new rewards system, creators must be at least 18 years old, reside in a supported region, and maintain an active subscription to X Premium, Premium+, or Premium Business. Channels must hold at least 500 verified followers and accumulate a minimum of 500,000 Home timeline views from verified Premium accounts within the preceding 90 days. Because payouts rely on verified engagement, creators must continuously sustain these baseline metrics to remain eligible for recurring distributions.

Existing members of the legacy revenue-sharing model must reapply under the updated criteria when applications open for them on September 8, while new creators meeting the thresholds can apply immediately. The platform pivot follows a March update that weighted engagement based on a user’s geographic region, a measure introduced to deter non-domestic accounts from artificially monetizing localized political discourse. It remains unconfirmed whether this regional weighting policy will persist under the new framework.
