TCL to debut world-first SQD-Mini LED TVs in South Africa

TCL is set to disrupt the South African home entertainment market by becoming the first brand to launch Super Quantum Dot (SQD) Mini LED smart TVs locally. This move comes as the company continues its aggressive expansion, promising flagship-tier technology without the prohibitive “premium” price tag typically associated with high-end displays.

The cornerstone of TCL’s 2026 strategy is the SQD-Mini LED range, which utilizes a refined blue LED backlight to enhance colour accuracy and eliminate bleeding. This hardware leap results in a 33% improvement in colour gamut compared to previous generations. Mike Chen, General Manager of TCL South Africa, emphasized that these panels maintain vibrant colour integrity even at extreme brightness levels.

The upcoming lineup caters to various segments, with the flagship X11L model reportedly reaching a staggering 10,000 nits of peak brightness, while the entry-level C7L delivers a still-impressive 3,000 nits. To complement these visuals, TCL has partnered with luxury Danish audio brand Bang & Olufsen to integrate high-fidelity, full-range sound systems directly into the TV chassis.

Beyond entertainment, TCL is preparing to launch a new suite of Google-integrated appliances. While the brand already offers refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines in South Africa, many of these lacked the interconnected “smart” features found in rival ecosystems from Samsung or LG.

The new slate of appliances will utilize the TCL Home App, built on Google’s technology, allowing the TV to act as a central hub. Users will be able to issue voice commands to control air conditioners, robot vacuums, and the upcoming “Google Smart Home” appliances. This ecosystem approach is designed to provide a seamless, voice-activated lifestyle that integrates directly with the Google Nest environment already popular among local tech enthusiasts.

TCL’s focus on South Africa is backed by massive global momentum. The company reported a 36.7% increase in annual profit for 2025, reaching approximately R5.29 billion. Revenue in emerging markets, including Africa, grew nearly 20% year-on-year, highlighting the region as a primary driver for the brand’s scale. Since its local debut in late 2021, TCL has successfully used a high-spec, high-value strategy to gain traction against legacy players, a trend it clearly intends to accelerate with its latest hardware and software innovations.
