SuperSport to broadcast entire FIFA World Cup 2026 across all DStv packages

In a landmark shift for African broadcasting, SuperSport has announced that all 104 matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be available across every DStv tier, from the entry-level Access package to the top-tier Premium. This is the first time a global marquee event of this scale has been made available to MultiChoice’s most affordable subscribers, who pay as little as R99 per month.

The announcement marks the first major strategic move since Canal+ took operational control of MultiChoice. It signals a departure from the traditional pay-TV model, which historically used exclusive sports rights to force users into more expensive bouquets. Under the leadership of David Mignot, Canal+ Africa CEO, the group has adopted a “stop the bleeding” mandate to address declining subscriber numbers. This includes scrapping annual price hikes and prioritizing reach over high-margin exclusivity.

While the broadcaster is widening access, it is making a notable technical tradeoff. SuperSport confirmed it will not broadcast the tournament in 4K, opting instead to invest in localization. The 2026 tournament will feature:

  • Seven African languages: Multi-language commentary to cater to diverse regional audiences.
  • Regional Hubs: Investment in in-market production crews and remote commentary technology.
  • Rapid Highlights: Match clips will be available digitally within 10 minutes of the final whistle.

Rendani Ramovha, Canal+ director for sports content, noted that the focus is on moving away from a “South African-centric lens” toward a hyper-localised experience for all 26 sub-Saharan markets.

The decision to open the tournament to Access subscribers is likely a defensive response to intensifying competition. The SABC, in partnership with Hollywoodbets, recently secured free-to-air rights for Bafana Bafana matches and other key fixtures. By offering the full 104-match slate on its cheapest package, DStv remains competitive against free-to-air alternatives while fending off new digital rivals like SportyTV.

With a record ten African nations qualified and the tournament expanding to 48 teams, the 2026 World Cup is set to be the most-watched event in the continent’s history. SuperSport is also ramping up anti-piracy “war rooms” to combat illegal streams, which Ramovha identified as a greater threat than traditional rival broadcasters.
