As part of its more comprehensive approach to the communities Octotel operates in, they have partnered with Edunova and the Cape Town Science Centre to deliver an impactful AI, Coding, and Robotics educational programme aimed at equipping young learners with the digital skills needed for the future.
The three-day workshops were hosted at Al-Azhar High School, Livingstone High School, and Bishop Lavis High School, where learners were introduced to emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, coding principles, and robotics. A total of 160 learners successfully completed the programme and received certificates recognising their achievement.
While providing schools with free access to reliable, high-speed fibre connectivity remains a key part of Octotel’s mission, the company believes true digital inclusion goes beyond simply connecting a building – it means empowering people to make the most of that connection.
Octotel CSR team lead Carly Haydricks stated that having access to world-class connectivity is only the first step. “The real impact happens when young people have the knowledge, confidence and skills to use technology to create opportunities for themselves. This programme was about making sure learners don’t just consume technology, but understand it, build with it and see themselves as part of the future it is creating,” she emphasised.
Through hands-on learning and practical engagement, learners were able to explore fields such as artificial intelligence, software development, robotics and innovation – areas expected to play a major role in shaping future careers.
The importance of introducing learners to emerging technology early was reinforced by Edunova Programme Lead: Innovation, Lionel Blooms, who highlighted both the growing adoption of AI among young people and the importance of understanding how to use it responsibly.
“It is now an imperative, with the increasing adoption of AI amongst learners, that learners attain and master AI literacy. This will ensure that learners understand the benefits and limitations of AI technology, especially as it pertains to their academic future and educational integrity,” Blooms stated.
The Cape Town Science Centre, which facilitated the Coding and Robotics component of the programme at Bishop Lavis High School, highlighted the importance of giving learners practical exposure to STEM-related fields.
According to Anda Makalala, project co-ordinator at the Cape Town Science Centre, early exposure can fundamentally change how learners view their own potential. “It helps learners see themselves not just as users of technology, but as creators. It builds confidence, problem-solving skills and opens their minds to exciting careers in technology, engineering and robotics,” Makalala added.
His biggest takeaway from working with the learners was seeing that confidence develop in real time. The schools involved also expressed their appreciation for the initiative and the opportunities it created for learners.
For Moegamat Nazie Adhikarie, ICT manager at Livingstone High School, the opportunity was also a reminder of what can happen when industry partners invest directly in the development of young people.
“As an educator, this type of training by Octotel and Edunova is extremely important for the learners’ future. When I look at what Octotel has done and their generosity to uplift our society and school, our learners get introduced to AI and its importance. It’s important for them to experience and be part of these kinds of workshops.”
For the 160 learners who completed the programme, receiving their completion certificates represented more than the end of a workshop. It marked the beginning of new possibilities.
A certificate today could become the first step towards a career as a software developer, AI specialist, engineer, entrepreneur, or technology innovator tomorrow. The overall experience represents a valuable foundation as they continue their educational journeys and explore the possibilities within technology-driven careers.
