NBC greenlights a game show adaptation of Wordle

The world’s most popular daily word puzzle is making the leap from smartphone screens to the silver screen. NBC has officially greenlit a primetime game show based on Wordle, produced in collaboration with The New York Times, Universal Television Alternative Studio, and Jimmy Fallon’s production company, Electric Hot Dog.

While the show stays true to the core mechanic of solving five-letter word puzzles, it introduces a high-stakes competitive layer. Unlike the solitary morning ritual most players are used to, the TV adaptation will feature:

  • Squad-Based Play: Obsessed players will team up in squads to go head-to-head in a “Wordle arena.”
  • Collaborative Strategy: The format aims to mirror the social aspect of the game, sharing wins and debating strategies, but with an added cash prize on the line.
  • Fast-Paced Action: Producers are promising a “fresh, fast-paced” take on the deliberate pacing of the original app.

The New York Times emphasized that their choice of partners was highly strategic. Jimmy Fallon’s Electric Hot Dog already has a proven track record with hits like Password and That’s My Jam. Hosting duties will be handled by Today Show co-host Savannah Guthrie, an avid player whom the Times describes as being exceptionally skilled at the game.

Since its debut by creator Josh Wardle in 2021 and its subsequent 2022 acquisition by The New York Times, Wordle has expanded far beyond its web-based roots. It has already inspired a Hasbro board game, a VR application, and countless unofficial spinoffs.

Production is slated to begin later this year, with the show expected to make its television debut in 2027.
