Google Photos to launch Wardrobe, an AI digital closet

Google Photos is set to introduce a new AI-driven feature this summer called Wardrobe, designed to transform your photo library into a “digital closet” for clothing and jewellery. The tool aims to simplify personal organization and help users visualize their daily fashion choices.

The feature functions by scanning your existing Google Photos library to identify various garments and accessories. Once the scan is complete, it generates an organized catalogue categorized into sections such as tops, bottoms, and jewellery, using thumbnails for easy visual reference.

Beyond mere organization, users can:

  • Mix and match specific items to create and save custom outfits.
  • Share these curated looks with friends or save them to a digital moodboard.
  • Utilize a “try-on” feature that leverages Google Shopping technology to generate a photo of the user wearing the selected ensemble.

As with many AI tools, Wardrobe has inherent practical limitations based on the data it accesses. The AI can only catalogue items that have appeared in your photos; any clothing you own but haven’t photographed will remain invisible to the system. Additionally, the feature may include items you have since donated or discarded, as it cannot distinguish between your current inventory and clothes seen in older photographs.

The Wardrobe feature is scheduled for a summer release. At launch, Android users will receive priority access, with an iOS version planned to follow at a later date.
