Chery to debut its first EV in South Africa, the Chery Q

Chery, currently South Africa’s top-selling Chinese automotive brand, has officially confirmed that it will enter the local electric vehicle (EV) market in 2026. The brand’s debut fully electric offering will be the Chery Q, a premium compact hatchback known internationally as the QQ3.

The launch marks a significant evolution for the nameplate. While the original petrol-powered QQ3 was famous for being South Africa’s cheapest car in 2008, the 2026 Chery Q is a tech-heavy, “born-electric” model designed to provide an accessible entry point into New Energy Vehicles (NEVs).

The Chery Q is built on a dedicated electric platform featuring a rear-mounted motor. With a peak power output of 90kW, it slightly outmuscles its direct competitor, the Geely E2 (85kW), though its 115Nm of torque is lower than the Geely’s 150Nm.

Powering the hatchback is a 42.7kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery. While its NEDC-estimated range is 400km, local drivers can expect a real-world range closer to 340km on the stricter WLTP cycle.

Despite its compact classification, the Q is deceptively large. It measures 4,195mm in length with a 2,700mm wheelbase, which is longer than many of its rivals. This translates into an exceptionally spacious cabin that comfortably accommodates passengers over six feet tall with ample legroom and headroom.

The interior is centred around a massive 15.6-inch infotainment display and an 8-inch digital instrument cluster. Chery has also integrated advanced AI-driven systems to enhance user connectivity and a 560-degree panoramic camera for easier manoeuvring.

Chery is aiming for a competitive price point, likely targeting the sub-R400,000 bracket to challenge the Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf. To distance itself from the original QQ3’s poor safety reputation, the new Q will feature a comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, including:

The Chery Q is part of a larger electrification strategy that has already seen the launch of hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Tiggo 4, 7, 8, and 9. The model will be a centrepiece at Auto China 2026 in Beijing, where Chery plans to demonstrate “embodied intelligence” through a partnership with AiMOGA Robotics.

Specific South African pricing and launch dates are expected in the coming months, but the Chery Q looks set to be a formidable contender in the race to make EVs a common sight on local roads.
