Bentley teases the Torcal, its first electric luxury vehicle

British luxury automaker Bentley has officially confirmed the first battery-electric vehicle (EV) in its storied history. The Volkswagen-owned brand released an initial teaser image of the upcoming model, christened the Bentley Torcal, and announced that the vehicle will make its full global debut in London on September 23rd.

“Our new Torcal sets extraordinary benchmarks in every area that matters, and may just be the most considered car in our history,” Frank-Steffern Walliser, Bentley CEO, said.

The Torcal moniker aligns with Bentley’s established tradition of naming its high-end machinery after striking geographic landmarks, joining the ranks of the Bentayga, Bacalar, and Batur. The name draws direct inspiration from the surreal, layered limestone landscapes of the El Torcal de Antequera rock formation in Andalusia, Spain. Simultaneously, the name is a clever play on the Latin word for torque—a fitting nod to the instant electric performance the powertrain will provide. This rollout marks the realization of a vision first outlined by Bentley back in 2021 when it initially committed to developing an electric SUV.

While official imagery remains scarce, spy photographers have tracked the Torcal’s development cycle across extreme environments over the past several months:

The dashboard houses a massive, curved digital display interface, though purists will be happy to note that Bentley has retained tactile, mechanical switchgear for critical cabin controls.

Bentley intends to roll out a steady stream of technical updates and design details in the weeks leading up to the September 23rd premiere. The company emphasizes that while the vehicle represents a radical shift in propulsion technology, it will preserve the bespoke craftsmanship and effortless performance that have defined the brand since its founding in 1919.
