Amazon South Africa introduces scheduled delivery slots ahead of holidays

Amazon South Africa has introduced a new feature allowing customers to select a preferred delivery slot, significantly increasing convenience just ahead of the busy Black Friday and Christmas shopping periods.

“Customers in major cities can now select their preferred morning, afternoon or evening delivery slots, offering increased convenience,” Amazon announced in a statement on Tuesday.

The new “multiple-delivery windows” service is currently available in major metropolitan areas: Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town. This feature allows customers to schedule their deliveries up to one day in advance, selecting from three distinct time windows:

  • Morning: 8am to 1pm
  • Afternoon: 1pm to 6pm
  • Evening: 5pm to 8pm

The company confirmed that the service maintains the current affordable delivery fee structure, costing customers just R2 for delivery slot options with no minimum order value.

“Customers already love the convenience of our fast delivery—they can order a single tube of toothpaste or a bottle of sunlight liquid, and it will be delivered for free the same day,” said Amazon Sub-Saharan Africa MD Robert Koen. “Now they can choose what time of day their emergency toothpaste will be delivered.”

Amazon launched its retail marketplace operations in South Africa last year. Its entry has been characterized as a relatively soft market launch, as it still does not offer many of the core products and services available in the U.S. and other international markets. These missing components include its full hardware line-up (such as Kindle e-readers and Alexa smart speakers) and the comprehensive Amazon Prime subscription service. Despite this gradual approach, the introduction of scheduled delivery windows signals Amazon’s commitment to enhancing local customer experience and competing on convenience.
