Amazon overhauls Kindle lineup with a metal finish and flush displays

Amazon has unveiled a comprehensive refresh across its entire Kindle e-reader portfolio, introducing updated industrial designs, vibrant new colourways, and upgraded display hardware. The overhaul eliminates the recessed screen bezel previously found on the entry-level Kindle, establishing a uniform flush-front display design across all product tiers alongside seamless chassis colour wraps and new aluminium-backed Signature Edition variants.

The redesigned 6-inch entry-level Kindle represents Amazon’s most compact e-reader to date, featuring a 6.8mm profile, a full millimetre thinner than its predecessor, and a lightweight frame weighing 140 grams. Equipped with 16GB of base storage, the entry-level model delivers a 30 percent increase in book load speeds alongside a battery life rating of up to six weeks on a single charge. Priced from $150 with lockscreen advertising, the standard model launches in Graphite and a muted purple Ube finish featuring a distinctive, slightly textured soft-touch paint finish.

Amazon is also introducing a premium variant of the entry-level e-reader built with an aluminium back plate and expanded 32GB storage capacity. Weighing 160 grams—20 grams heavier than the standard plastic model—this metal-clad edition is available in Alpine Sky Aluminium and Seaglass Green Aluminium options.

Moving up the lineup, the new Kindle Paperwhite receives a thinner, lighter chassis while extending battery endurance up to 12 weeks on a single charge. The device features the largest display panel and highest contrast ratio in Paperwhite history for improved readability under direct sunlight, along with full waterproofing and an adjustable warm front light. The standard 16GB Paperwhite starts at $200 in Graphite, while the $250 Paperwhite Signature Edition adds an aluminium rear casing, 32GB of storage, auto-adjusting ambient lighting, and double-tap gesture support for page navigation.

For colour reading, the redesigned Kindle Colorsoft incorporates an updated edge-to-edge colour display engineered for enhanced text and image clarity. The basic 16GB Colorsoft opens at $290 in Graphite. The top-tier Colorsoft Signature Edition, priced from $320, introduces an aluminium enclosure, 32GB of storage, auto-adjusting front lighting, double-tap page turning, and wireless dock charging compatibility in Graphite and Fig finishes. Hands-on testing confirms rapid page refresh rates and responsive navigation performance, particularly when paired with Amazon’s new physical Page-Turn-Cover accessory.
