Google’s recent I/O developer conference showcased a future heavy on artificial intelligence, introducing features like the Intelligent Search Box, which processes videos, files, and Chrome tabs, alongside 24/7 background AI Search agents for Pro and Ultra subscribers. However, this aggressive push has triggered a significant backlash from users seeking a traditional search experience, resulting in a “sustained surge” of new installations for privacy-focused competitor DuckDuckGo.

In the week following Google’s announcements, DuckDuckGo reported a striking increase in US app installs, which rose by an average of 18.1 percent for six consecutive days. This momentum peaked on May 25 with a 30.5 percent spike. The growth was predominantly driven by iOS users; iPhone installations surged by an average of 33 percent week-on-week, skyrocketing to a 69.9 percent peak on May 25.
Furthermore, traffic to DuckDuckGo’s dedicated AI-free site, noai.duckduckgo.com, climbed by an average of 22.7 percent week-on-week, hitting its highest growth of 27.7 percent on May 24. Notably, this upward trend persisted through the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a period that typically sees a drop in user activity. Because this growth rate inside the United States vastly outperformed international metrics, DuckDuckGo attributes the influx directly to American users reacting against Google’s US-centric Search modifications.
This data aligns with growing frustration online, including numerous Reddit threads documenting users abandoning Google. DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg addressed the shift directly, stating, “Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out. As a result, their results are getting worse, not better.” Weinberg emphasized that DuckDuckGo aims to put users back in control of their browsing experience.
While DuckDuckGo does offer its own suite of AI utilities, including features comparable to Google’s AI Overviews, the fundamental difference lies in user autonomy. DuckDuckGo allows individuals to easily toggle these tools off within the main settings menu or entirely bypass them by default via their noai web portal, offering a sanctuary for those fatigued by the mandatory integration of AI.
