Circle Internet Group, the NYSE-listed issuer of the dollar-backed USDC stablecoin, has appointed Gillian Darko as its Vice President and Head of Africa. Darko, a former Yellow Card executive, announced her new role on Monday via a LinkedIn post. T

his appointment deepens Circle’s strategic push into Africa’s expanding digital payments market. She expressed enthusiasm for the ecosystem, stablecoins, and the future of digital finance on the continent.

In her new role, Darko will be tasked with expanding USDC’s reach across African payment networks. She will also navigate the complex regulatory requirements that could determine how widely foreign-issued stablecoins can be offered in key African markets. Circle itself reported $73.3 billion in USDC circulation at the end of Q2 2026, marking a 19% increase from the previous year. Quarterly on-chain transaction volume for USDC also saw a substantial rise, surging 151% to $14.8 trillion.
