Absa has officially added Shell to its loyalty network, significantly expanding the footprint where customers can optimize their fuel spending. Under this new partnership, Absa Rewards members filling up at participating Shell service stations across South Africa can earn up to 30% cashback while simultaneously “double-dipping” into Shell’s native V+ loyalty ecosystem to claim an instant reward of up to 50 cents per litre on fuel.

Previously, Absa customers were restricted to earning fuel rewards exclusively through Sasol forecourts. Adding Shell injects substantial convenience into the program. Shell is the third-largest fuel station operator in South Africa with roughly 600 nationwide locations, compared to Sasol’s sixth-place ranking at approximately 400 forecourts. The expanded network arrives at a critical operational juncture; in April, Bloomberg reported that Shell was in advanced discussions with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (Adnoc) to sell its South African retail fuel assets in a R16 billion deal.
To activate the dual-benefit structure, Absa users must hold an active Shell V+ membership and pay using their Absa card. Alongside the 50 cents per litre fuel benefit, the V+ program offers up to 2.5% back on qualifying in-store convenience shop purchases.
“Fuel is one of the most significant everyday expenses for many South Africans, particularly at a time when household budgets are under pressure,” noted Alicia Raynard, Executive for Absa Rewards. To combat this friction, Absa extended temporary fuel relief measures, elevating the maximum qualifying monthly fuel spend cap from R3,000 to R5,000.
However, earning potential varies drastically by membership status. Top-tier (Tier 5) members receive a lucrative 30% cashback rate, allowing them to reclaim up to R1,500 per month, whereas baseline Tier 1 members receive just 6.5%.
Reaching the coveted 800-point Tier 5 threshold requires a dedicated portfolio of Absa financial products. Members must route their salary into an Absa transactional account and process at least 10 monthly transactions totalling R32,000. Completing five digital banking or app transactions secures an initial 340 points.
Maintaining a credit card with an automated minimum-balance debit order alongside an active R2,000 overdraft facility yields an additional 215 points. The final 245 points are typically secured by linking multi-product portfolios, such as home loans, vehicle financing, or structured investments exceeding R1 million, with bonus multipliers unlocked for scheduling recurring monthly investment deposits.
