Nairobi — The Project Management Institute (PMI) Sub-Saharan Africa is leading a strategic delegation of African public and private sector leaders to China to explore best practices in large-scale project delivery, talent development, and organisational agility.
The delegation–comprising officials from South Africa’s Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, corporate executives, academia, and professional bodies–will engage with major Chinese firms including ZTE, China Communications Construction Company, CNPC Engineering, Hengbao Co., and Tsinghua University.
“This visit is an opportunity to observe a country that has built a global reputation for delivery,” said George Asamani, Managing Director of PMI Sub-Saharan Africa. “China’s progress is rooted in embedding project management into national strategy and institutional systems.”
The group will participate in the China PMO Symposium, roundtable meetings, and an engagement with the China International Talent Exchange Foundation (CITEF), PMI’s Chinese government partner.
The visit comes amid a rising demand for certified project professionals in Africa, with PMI estimating that the region holds only 2% of the certified talent required to support its rapid digital, infrastructure, and industrial transformation.
China recently pledged $51 billion in new financial support for African development over the next three years, making the tour especially timely for knowledge exchange and cross-border collaboration.
PMI says the visit aims not only to enhance Africa’s capacity to deliver at scale, but also to build bridges between African and Chinese institutions, deepen mutual understanding, and advance project management as a cornerstone of sustainable development.
