How to secure your WhatsApp username and what to expect

Meta has announced that WhatsApp will introduce unique usernames, allowing users to conceal their personal phone numbers and enhance their privacy. While the feature is slated for a gradual global rollout over the coming months, a reservation system has officially opened. Users looking to secure their preferred handle across platforms must act quickly before they are claimed.

The reservation system is currently accessible exclusively through the mobile application. If you are using an iOS device, follow these steps:

  1. Access Profile: Open WhatsApp and tap the “You” button in the bottom navigation bar, then tap your profile picture or name at the top of the screen.
  2. Initiate Reservation: Select the “Create Username” or “Reserve Username” option from the profile menu.
  3. Save Handle: Type your desired unique handle into the field. Once verified as available, tap Save and then Done to finalize.

If you are using an Android device, the navigation path within the application is slightly different:

  1. Open Settings: Open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the screen, and select Settings.
  2. Access Profile: Tap on your profile area at the top of the Settings menu to open your account details.
  3. Save Handle: Tap “Create Username” or “Reserve Username”, enter your chosen name, and tap Save followed by Done.

Usernames must follow strict character guidelines to be accepted by the system:

  • Length Constraints: Must be between 3 and 35 characters long.
  • Allowed Characters: Limited to lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, and periods.
  • Restrictions: Completely numerical handles are forbidden, and Meta will automatically block a curated list of “restricted words and phrases.”

Every username must be entirely unique. If you prefer, you will see an option to sync your existing handle directly from Facebook or Instagram, assuming nobody else has claimed it on WhatsApp first. If a user changes or deletes their handle, it enters a cooldown phase and becomes available for others to claim after 14 days. Meta plans to cap the total number of times a user can alter their handle, though the specific limit has not been finalized.

While handles improve privacy by hiding phone numbers, consumer advocates warn they could ease the way for identity fraud and impersonation scams. Meta intends to implement protective measures, including an authorization key requirement when a user is contacted via username for the first time. The company will also block users from registering high-profile celebrity or executive names, though it has not yet outlined a formal identity verification framework for standard accounts.

This lack of clarity has already caused major regulatory friction. The Indian government has formally called on Meta to freeze the rollout within its borders. Authorities are demanding comprehensive explanations regarding how Meta plans to combat fraud and verify copycat accounts in India, which represents WhatsApp’s largest global market with over 500 million active users.
