SpaceX to challenge telecom giants with US mobile network

SpaceX has signalled intentions to launch a dedicated Starlink mobile service for US consumers, according to a report from the Financial Times. The aggressive expansion would position the Elon Musk-led aerospace giant to compete head-to-head with legacy terrestrial carriers Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Currently, SpaceX operates a direct-to-cell partnership with T-Mobile, providing supplemental satellite coverage to eliminate dead zones in remote areas. However, its ambitions have rapidly evolved.

During a recent IPO roadshow, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell informed investors that the company is considering launching a standalone Starlink retail wireless product. To support this, SpaceX could build out its own terrestrial mobile network infrastructure inside the United States, utilizing a hybrid satellite-and-ground strategy.

While Reuters could not immediately verify the details and SpaceX did not immediately comment, the company’s recent infrastructure acquisitions heavily align with this timeline.

SpaceX has quietly laid the groundwork for a massive wireless rollout by aggressively acquiring critical airwaves. The company completed two major transactions with EchoStar:

  • September: Purchased wireless spectrum licenses for approximately $17 billion.
  • November: Secured additional spectrum licenses for $2.6 billion.

This combined $19.6 billion investment grants Starlink the necessary wireless airwaves to rapidly deploy a robust, cost-effective direct-to-cell mobile service without relying entirely on third-party carrier networks.

Wall Street is already reacting to the potential market shift. In a research note published earlier this month, brokerage firm Oppenheimer warned that SpaceX is poised to heavily disrupt the $1.6 trillion US communications industry as Starlink expands its capabilities beyond standard home internet.

SpaceX’s historic corporate valuation remains firmly anchored by Starlink’s explosive commercial success, which now boasts over 10 million active subscribers, alongside a dominant rocket launch business that has completely transformed commercial access to orbit.
