YouTube is rolling out a suite of new features tailored specifically for Premium subscribers, with a distinct nod toward elevating the podcast listening experience.

Leading the update is an innovative auto-speed function, currently live on Android and slated for an iOS release in the near future. According to YouTube, this feature “intelligently adjusts playback speed during relevant moments like slower speech or information-dense segments” across podcasts and traditional video formats alike. While this marks a significant update for YouTube, the concept itself isn’t entirely new to the landscape; dedicated podcast platforms have pioneered similar tools for years, such as Overcast’s “Smart Speed” setting, which dynamically shortens silences to optimize playback time.
In tandem with playback controls, YouTube is leveraging artificial intelligence to improve content discovery. Premium and YouTube Music Premium subscribers in select regions can now utilize an AI-driven recommendation tool called “Ask Music” within the YouTube Music app. Originally designed to generate customized radio stations and playlists, the tool now extends its capabilities to podcasts, serving up tailored show recommendations based on your current mood, specified genres, or established listening preferences.

Mobile users are also receiving a usability upgrade with the introduction of an “on-the-go” mode, currently available to Premium members on Android and coming to iOS in the months ahead. This feature streamlines the interface for background playback, offering larger, simplified controls to easily skip forward or jump back without needing to fully engage with the standard video player layout.
