Asmara, 12 November 2023- World Diabetics Day on 12 November was commemorated at national level in Asmara under the theme “Strengthening Global Health”.
According to Dr. Goitom Mebrahtu, Chairman of the National Association of the diabetic, lack of body exercise, obesity, an imbalanced diet, and excessive alcohol consumption are the main causes of diabetes, which is becoming a global health concern.
Indicating that according to a report, over half a billion people worldwide suffer from diabetes, and that number is expected to rise to 1.3 billion in the next 30 years, Dr. Andebrhan Tesfatsion, acting Director General of Public Health at the Ministry of Health, called for integrated effort in order to foster the desired behavioral change about the condition.
Mr. Tesfay Tesfatsion, head of the Ministry of Health branch in the Central Region, for his part called for due attention in raising the awareness of families with a view to nurture the desired behavioral change on the disease.
Mr. Tesfay also said that sustainable training programs are being provided to village health coordinators with a view to enable they play active role in raising the awareness of the public.
World Diabetics Day is being observed every year on 14 November.
