Watch this electric hypercar beat the Bugatti Chiron speed record

A new hypercar has seemingly dethroned Bugatti’s record for the fastest production car, and unsurprisingly, it’s an electric vehicle. During a livestream from the Automotive Testing Papenburg site in Germany, the YangWang U9 Extreme hit a top speed of 496.22 km/h (or around 308.33 mph), edging out the previous record holder, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, which topped out at 304.77 mph in 2019.

While the official record for the fastest production car requires an average of runs in both directions, the U9 Extreme’s achievement is still notable since Bugatti’s record was also set on a one-way run.

The U9 Extreme’s performance is powered by four electric motors that produce just under 3,000 horsepower. The hypercar also runs on one of the world’s first 1,200V platforms, which improves performance, efficiency, and helps reduce weight.

The YangWang U9 Extreme will be extremely limited, with production capped at just 30 units. While no official price has been announced, its advanced technology and record-breaking performance suggest it will come with a high cost to match.
