The core of the partnership involves integrating Starlink’s satellite backhaul into Vodacom’s existing mobile network. This strategic integration is intended to:
- Accelerate network coverage expansion in areas where traditional infrastructure is challenging or not feasible.
- Increase network performance in rural areas currently underserved by conventional fibre or microwave links.
Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub emphasized the importance of this low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology in addressing the digital divide. He stated that the partnership will “unlock new possibilities for the unconnected.”

Under the agreement, Vodacom will act as a reseller for Starlink.
- Reselling: Vodacom will resell Starlink equipment and services directly to enterprise and small business customers across Africa.
- Localised Value: Vodacom retains the flexibility to create localised value propositions that account for the unique requirements and affordability challenges present in the African market.
This move follows similar strategic efforts by major tech players to use LEO satellite networks to reach remote areas, such as the deal between Amazon’s Kuiper and cell tower companies in Southern Africa.
