Donald Trump is doing “fine” following a shooting at a Saturday rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a Trump spokesperson told Business Insider in an email.
The former president was whisked off the stage by his security detail after shots were heard.
“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” the spokesperson said. “He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”
Details of the Saturday incident remain unclear, but video from the rally shows Trump ducking and reaching a hand near his face. Photos show blood around the former president’s ear.
A spokesperson for the Secret Service said on X that there was an “incident” at the rally and that the former president is safe.
“The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe,” the statement read. “This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available.”
The Associated Press reported that the Butler County District Attorney said that one attendee of the rally, as well as a suspected “shooter” had been killed.
The Butler Township Police Department and District Attorney’s office did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s requests for comment.
In the wake of the shooting, President Joe Biden issued a statement saying he had been briefed on the matter.
“I have been brief on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania,” Biden’s statement said. ” I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.”
“Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America,” the statement continued. “We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
