The first Minecraft Movie was a colossal hit, setting the record for the biggest box office opening weekend for a video game film in the US. It has since become the second-highest-grossing movie of the year, earning nearly $1 billion. Given this success, the sequel announcement comes as little surprise to industry observers.
In related news, Nintendo is also preparing a follow-up to its own video game blockbuster: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to hit theatres on April 3, 2026.
