Spotify launches Smart Reorder, matching key and BPM for seamless transitions

Spotify is expanding its suite of “DJ-style” features with a new update designed to eliminate jarring shifts between songs. Following the successful launch of custom transitions last year, the streaming giant is now rolling out Smart Reorder, a tool that automatically rearranges playlists based on musical theory and tempo.

The new feature allows Premium users to optimize their listening experience with a single tap. By analysing the Beats Per Minute (BPM) and the musical key of every track in a playlist, Spotify’s algorithm sequences them to create a professional-grade flow. This ensures that transitions between high-energy dance tracks or melancholic ballads feel natural rather than disruptive.

To activate the feature, paying subscribers can simply:

  • Open a personal playlist and tap the Mix icon.
  • Select the Edit button.
  • Scroll to the new Smart Reorder option.
  • Hit Save to lock in the algorithmically optimized sequence.

The update follows an explosion in user engagement with Spotify’s mixing tools. Since introducing custom transitions in August 2025, users have streamed more than 220 hours of mixed playlists. Spotify noted that fans are particularly fond of seamless “beat-matched” pairings, citing popular transitions like The Weeknd’s Wake Me Up into After Hours, and the high-energy shift from Flo Rida’s Low into Rihanna’s S&M.

By automating the complex process of harmonic mixing—a task usually reserved for professional club DJs—Spotify is betting that “uninterrupted progressions” will become the new standard for the casual listener’s daily soundtrack.
