A key feature of the new app is self-RICA functionality, allowing users to quickly sign up and activate their mobile number without needing a physical SIM card or visiting a store. For those who still prefer a physical SIM, these remain available at Pick n Pay branches.
The app also empowers customers to create personalized mobile plans, choosing their desired data, voice, and SMS allocations each month. These plans are valid for 30 days and auto-renew unless cancelled, providing flexibility with no lock-ins or hidden fees.
Deven Moodley, Executive Head of Value-Added Services, Financial Services, and Mobile at Pick n Pay, stated that “digital engagement is no longer optional in South Africa” and customers demand flexible, easy-to-use mobile plans. He emphasized that the app was designed to put “convenience, control, and value in the customer’s hands.”
Pick n Pay Mobile has also supersized its bundles, offering more data, airtime, and voice minutes at more affordable prices. The app makes topping up, tracking usage, and adjusting plans seamless.
Since its launch in 2020, Pick n Pay Mobile has been popular for its rewards linked to the Smart Shopper loyalty program. These rewards have now been enhanced. Users automatically earn 1MB of free data for every R1 spent in-store at Pick n Pay, instantly credited upon a minimum R20 recharge.
A new loyalty tier has also been introduced to reward long-term app usage. After six consecutive months, customers earn 5% back on their monthly mobile spend, increasing to 10% after nine months. These are in addition to the Smart Shopper data rewards.
Pick n Pay Mobile operates through a strategic partnership with Huge NXTGN. Jason Harmsen, Huge NXTGN MD, noted the partnership combines Pick n Pay’s customer reach with their “open-access, next-generation platform.” Moodley concluded that these enhancements are a “big step” in offering the “most compelling mobile offer” and removing typical barriers to staying connected.
