Perplexity has announced a major change for its Comet AI browser, making it free for everyone worldwide. The browser was previously an exclusive feature, accessible only to Perplexity Max subscribers who paid $200 per month.

The company stated that Comet had become “the most sought-after browser on the internet with millions signed up to the waitlist.” That waitlist is now eliminated, and the company confirmed that this is not a limited-time offer—Comet “will always be free.”
For those unfamiliar, Comet is a web browser that integrates Perplexity’s AI as the default search engine. Its core feature is an AI chatbot that accompanies every search in the sidebar. Users can interact with the chatbot to:
- Ask follow-up questions.
- Summarize web page text.
- In some cases, take actions like looking up directions or sending emails
Comet pulls and correlates information from the web to generate its AI responses. As with any AI summary, users should always double-check crucial information for accuracy.
This move is the latest step in Perplexity’s broader strategy. The company is currently developing a mobile version of the browser and an integrative AI assistant. Perplexity is not alone in this space; Comet joins other AI-enhanced browsers, including offerings from Google Chrome and The Browser Company’s Dia.
