MultiChoice Group has clarified that it has not launched 4K-resolution content on its DStv Stream platform, despite a media report claiming otherwise. Although the company has the technical capability to offer 4K services and has tested them in the past, its streaming service currently maxes out at 1080p (full HD).

A report published earlier by MyBroadband with the headline “DStv 4K streaming is here” was later updated after MultiChoice’s statement. The company explained that while the technology to support 4K is in place—and was even used to stream the 2022 FIFA World Cup—there are no current plans to roll it out more broadly.
In a statement, MultiChoice noted that the demand for 4K content in Africa “simply isn’t there yet.” Offering 4K streams requires significantly more bandwidth and increases costs for broadcasters. According to MultiChoice South Africa CEO Byron du Plessis, 4K remains a “niche part of the market” and is not an urgent priority for the company. He stated that the business case does not currently support a wider launch.
Du Plessis reiterated that MultiChoice regularly reviews the feasibility of offering 4K to its customers and will make an announcement if it becomes commercially viable in the future.
