Looking Glass debuts Musubi, a holographic photo frame

Looking Glass has been the most persistent advocate for holographic displays since 2019, and its latest release, the Musubi, may finally bring the technology to the masses. Scheduled to ship in June, the Musubi is priced at a surprisingly accessible $149, a significant drop from the company’s previous developer-centric kits.

The Musubi is a 7-inch digital frame featuring a glass border and white matte finish. It is designed to store up to 1,000 holographic images or 30-second video clips. The device is portable, offering three hours of battery life on a single charge, though it can also run indefinitely when connected to a wall adapter.

To display content, users must first convert their standard photos and videos into holographic files using Looking Glass’s free desktop application. Once processed, files are transferred to the frame via a standard USB-C connection.

While Looking Glass has explored this form factor before, notably with the $300 Looking Glass Go in 2023, the Musubi utilizes the company’s most advanced hardware to date. It features Hololuminescent Display (HLD) technology, which was first announced in 2025. This system combines traditional 2D display layers with a “3D holographic volume,” allowing multiple people to view 3D content simultaneously without the need for specialized glasses or eye-tracking sensors.

Looking Glass is launching the Musubi via a Kickstarter campaign starting today. For the first 24 hours, early supporters can secure the frame for a promotional price of $99. Following this window, the price will return to the retail standard of $149.

While Kickstarter projects often carry risks, Looking Glass has a proven track record of fulfilling past campaigns. The company’s firm commitment to a June shipping window suggests that the Musubi is already deep in the production phase and ready for a smooth market entry.
