HONOR Magic 8 Pro arrives in South Africa

The HONOR Magic 8 Pro is officially set to debut in South Africa on 1 March 2026, positioning itself as a formidable contender in the premium smartphone market with a recommended retail price of R27,999. Following its international unveiling in China late last year, the device brings significant upgrades over its predecessor, focusing heavily on high-end performance, sophisticated photography, and deeply integrated artificial intelligence. For the South African launch, the handset will be available in a single, striking Sunrise Gold colourway, featuring a robust configuration of 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

A major highlight of the Magic 8 Pro is its status as the first smartphone in the country to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. This processing power is supported by a massive 7,100mAh battery, a feat achieved through the use of advanced silicon-carbon battery technology. This high-density energy solution allows the device to maintain a sleek profile while reportedly providing up to two full days of battery life on a single charge. All major local mobile networks are expected to stock the device at launch, though some retailers may receive units as early as next week.

The camera system represents another significant leap forward. The rear array is headlined by an industry-leading 200-megapixel “ultra-night” telephoto lens designed to capture detail in extreme low-light conditions. This is part of a triple-lens setup that includes a 50-megapixel main sensor and a 50-megapixel wide-aperture sensor utilizing a sophisticated “1G + 5P” lens structure. On the front, the device houses a 50-megapixel selfie camera paired with a 3D depth-sensing lens for improved portraiture and security.

Adding to its physical utility is the “Ultimate AI Button,” a haptic-enabled control located on the bottom right-hand side of the frame. While it functions similarly to a traditional camera shutter, offering tactile controls for focusing, burst shooting, and zooming, it also serves as the gateway to the phone’s suite of artificial intelligence. Beyond photography, a single press activates HONOR’s AI assistant, which powers new safety and productivity tools such as real-time subtitle generation and advanced detection systems for AI-generated deepfakes and voice cloning.
