Is Cyber Monday a good time to buy a laptop?
Yes! Laptops tend to receive big discounts on Cyber Monday, because retailers want to clear out their stock before new models get released next year. Even high-end gaming laptops fall to midrange or budget levels, which makes Cyber Monday pretty much the best time to buy a new laptop.
And don’t be afraid to buy a new laptop. You might be tempted to snag a laptop’s 2022 or 2021 model, thinking it’s cheaper, but these older models are rarely any less expensive than the newest versions.
Also, be sure to compare prices between websites. Different retailers might offer the same laptop for wildly different prices.
What’s the difference between a Windows laptop and a Chromebook?
Chromebooks are a unique type of laptop that runs a system called ChromeOS, instead of Windows. ChromeOS is almost entirely based on your Google/Gmail account, and apps run through your internet browser. The apps you usually associate with Windows, like Microsoft Word, are replaced with Google apps like Google Docs.
Compared to Windows laptops, Chromebooks can be very restrictive. If you don’t have an internet connection, they’re almost useless. And they’re not made for running high-end games or other intensive apps.
But for those trade-offs, Chromebooks are incredibly fast and have fantastically long battery life. If you only use your laptop for browsing the internet, using social media, and other simple productivity tasks, a Chromebook can be a perfect budget option. It’ll just take some time to get used to the new, simpler operating system.
How much RAM do I need?
On all but the most budget laptops, you’ll want at least 16GB of RAM. 32GB is best for high-end gaming laptops. Websites and apps are big enough now that anything less than that will mean consistently slow performance.
A few years ago, basic users could get away with only 8GB. And for budget laptops, it can still work. But that just isn’t enough these days to adequately support modern programs. This is especially true if you’re the kind of person who keeps dozens of internet tabs open at once.
The other exception here is for Chromebooks, which nearly all come with only 4 to 8GB of RAM. That’s fine since Chromebooks are far simpler than PCs, but you’ll still want to stick with 8GB or higher.
