Africa: Oluwatobi Ajayi – Redefining Mobility and Manufacturing in Africa

Automobiles Limited, Oluwatobi Ajayi stands at the forefront of Africa’s automotive renaissance–an innovator, entrepreneur, and visionary whose work continues to redefine what is possible within Nigeria’s industrial landscape. As the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Nord Automobiles Limited, Nigeria’s foremost indigenous automotive brand, Ajayi embodies the ingenuity, resilience, and transformative leadership that the Vanguard Award seeks to celebrate. His journey–shaped by bold ambition, technical mastery, and an unwavering commitment to local manufacturing–transcends commercial success, contributing meaningfully to national development and Africa’s industrial advancement.

Ajayi’s ascent in the automotive sector began at one of the world’s most respected automobile companies, Mercedes-Benz Nigeria. There, his sharp business acumen and deep technical understanding quickly set him apart. Rising to the position of Division Head for Vans–a remarkable achievement both in pace and significance–he demonstrated an uncommon blend of leadership, strategic insight, and operational excellence. His tenure at Mercedes-Benz equipped him with a profound appreciation of global automotive standards, customer expectations, and the structural demands of a highly competitive industry.

Driven by a compelling vision to localise excellence and redefine mobility solutions within Africa, Ajayi later co-founded Jetvan, an authorised Mercedes-Benz dealership. This milestone not only expanded his footprint within the automotive value chain but also reinforced his reputation as a builder of resilient enterprises capable of thriving in complex markets. Yet, even this achievement served merely as a prelude to a far more ambitious undertaking–one that would place him at the centre of Nigeria’s quest for automotive self-reliance.

The founding of Nord Automobiles Limited marked a watershed moment, not only in Ajayi’s career but in the history of Nigerian manufacturing. Under his leadership, Nord has rapidly evolved into a pioneering automobile brand, recognised as a leading automotive corporation in Africa and widely celebrated as Nigeria’s premium indigenous automotive brand. Through Nord, Ajayi has championed the production of vehicles specifically engineered for African roads, climates, and driving realities. His dedication to local vehicle assembly, skills development, and the strengthening of Nigeria’s industrial value chain reflects his steadfast belief that Nigeria can design and build products that compete on the global stage.
