Canal+ slashes DStv top-tier subscription prices by up to 42%

French media conglomerate Canal+ is executing a major restructuring of MultiChoice’s DStv package tiers across Anglophone Africa, cutting top-tier subscription rates by up to 42% in key regional markets. The pricing overhaul follows a September operational refresh in South Africa and marks a strategic push to stabilize subscriber retention across sub-Saharan territories.

Data published across DStv’s regional portals indicates a streamlined four- or five-package structure replacing traditional channel tiers. Price reductions for the top-end bouquet vary significantly depending on local economic conditions, with Uganda experiencing the largest margin drop.

In markets like Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia, the new top-tier offering has been priced identically to the outgoing “Compact Plus” package level, effectively giving mid-tier subscribers access to full flagship sports and entertainment cataloguing without a price increase.

Conversely, South Africa and Nigeria maintain fixed baseline pricing structures, with Namibia aligning its satellite pricing directly to the South African Rand benchmark at N$979 per month.

The package overhaul addresses revenue pressures within MultiChoice’s primary South African base, where subscription revenue dipped 3% in early 2026 before seeing a slight recovery in the third quarter. Gains across other English-speaking African nations have partially cushioned the fall, prompting Canal+ to accelerate its regional rollout.

Under the new operational strategy:

  • Tier Simplification: Package options across Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Ghana, Malawi, and Nigeria will consolidate into four core tiers, while Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia adopt a five-tier setup similar to South Africa’s structure.
  • Kenyan Market Benchmark: Kenya serves as the baseline for the rollout, replacing traditional tier naming conventions (Access, Family, Compact, and Premium) with new Starter, Select, Sports, and Ultimate classifications. The top-tier “Ultimate” package at KSh 7,300 converts to roughly R930 per month.
  • Implementation Schedule: Official deployment across the majority of sub-Saharan markets is scheduled for November 2026.

According to statements from Canal+, the phased rollout aims to simplify product lineups while aligning regional subscription tiers with localized purchasing power and local macroeconomic constraints.
