Africa: Cape Venture Bridge Opens Applications for Western Cape Startups

Applications have opened for the first cohort of the Cape Venture Bridge, a new programme designed for Western Cape tech startups. AfricArise, part of the AfricArena network, is delivering the six-month initiative with support from the Western Cape Government’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT). Interested startups can submit their applications until November 15.

The Cape Venture Bridge aims to prepare selected startups for international venture capital and market expansion. Participants will receive training focused on market entry strategies beyond South Africa, cross-border finance, and regulatory compliance. The programme also includes investor pitching workshops, at least 12 hours of one-on-one mentorship, and ZAR125,000 (US$7,500) in tech credits. All participating startups will also take part in a public pitch event held in Cape Town.

Twenty startups will be selected for the initial cohort of the programme. Over its first 12 months, the Cape Venture Bridge aims to support a total of 40 startups across two distinct cohorts. The initiative plans to deliver more than 80 pre-arranged investor meetings and facilitate 50 business-to-business introductions. It also targets helping to facilitate over ZAR3 million (US$180,000) in capital for participating companies.

The programme seeks to position Cape Town founders for global competition, according to Dan Mabbyalas, director of programmes at AfricArise. He stated the Cape Venture Bridge provides investment readiness and mentorship, with the top five startups gaining a seat at GITEX Africa in Morocco. This event, scheduled for April next year, offers a platform where investors and partners seek opportunities from the Western Cape. DEDAT’s Tim Parle highlighted the Western Cape’s innovative tech businesses, welcoming initiatives that foster entrepreneurship, economic growth, and job creation.

The programme is open to technology or innovation-driven startups registered and operating within the Western Cape province. Eligible sectors include SaaS, climate-tech, agritech, fintech, e-commerce, and e-health. Applicants must plan international market entry within 12 months and be led by at least two co-founders or full-time team members capable of attending activities. AfricArise has expressed particular interest in receiving applications from women and young founders across the province.
