12 injured, including several children, in Tallahassee, Florida, shooting

Twelve people, including several minors, were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium, where homecoming celebrations included a football game Saturday.

The Tallahassee Police Department said in a statement that 11 of the 12 were shot and that three victims had serious injuries, with one minor in serious condition. The others, it said, were in stable condition.

Six of the injured are under 18 years old and the youngest is 11 years old, Chief Lawrence Revell of the Tallahassee Police Department said at a press conference early Sunday morning.

“Our preliminary information shows that an altercation occurred between individuals,” he added, describing it as “an isolated incident between two or three individuals.”

Revell said that no arrests had yet been made, nor anyone taken into custody, but that police believed one shooter was involved.

“Our priority is to determine what happened and why it happened, and to bring the people that are responsible for this to justice,” he added, asking any witnesses to come forward.

The violence unfolded about 8 p.m. at an intersection adjacent to Bragg Memorial Stadium, it said. Early in the evening, Florida A&M’s Rattlers hosted the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions for the historically Black university’s annual homecoming game.

After the shooting took place, the university issued a statement on X asking members of its campus community to stay away from the area.

It described the shooting as having taken place “near campus,” which it said was safe.

“Our hearts are with the victims and everyone affected by tonight’s incident on Perry Street,” the university said.

Florida State University, about a mile away from Florida A&M, issued an emergency alert about the violence and said it didn’t appear anyone from its school community was involved.

“As a precaution, students, faculty and staff in the Tallahassee area are advised to remain indoors this evening and stay alert,” it said.

Revell offered condolences to the victims and their families, and also praised officers who he said ran without hesitation “into the middle of this, still not knowing where the shooters were, still not knowing how many victims we had.”

“We had officers that were picking up victims and carrying them in their arms to transport victims because they couldn’t get through the mass of people,” he said.

The investigation into the violence was ongoing, and police asked witnesses to come forward.
