Sony has officially launched a free, ad-supported streaming television (FAST) service for PlayStation 5 owners in the United States. Integrated directly into the console’s Media tab, the expansion offers users access to more than 100 live channels and on-demand content from Sony Pictures Television and external partners. The catalogue spans movies, television series, sports, news, documentaries, and anime, drawing heavily from Sony’s Crunchyroll ecosystem.

The initial channel lineup includes curated film hubs like MovieSphere by Lionsgate, 50 Cent Action, and Sony One Horror Hits. Television streams feature popular series such as Community, The Walking Dead, Deal or No Deal USA, Fear Factor, and Ice Road Truckers. Anime offerings highlight major titles including Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter, and Death Note, alongside specialized programming covering gaming, esports, podcasts, and stand-up comedy. Sony announced plans to regularly refresh channel selections while preparing a secondary rollout to Canada and additional global markets.
The addition aligns with Sony’s strategic focus on maximizing monetization across its active install base. By keeping console owners within the PlayStation interface rather than losing engagement to standalone FAST platforms like Pluto TV, Tubi, or Roku, Sony secures a lucrative new pipeline for digital advertising revenue.
The timing of the launch, however, coincides with ongoing consumer frustration. Sony continues to face criticism over its transition away from physical game media, as well as a recent incident in Europe where licensing expirations resulted in users losing access to previously purchased digital movies. While upcoming State of Play keynotes will highlight upcoming software, this push into broadcast streaming risks drawing parallels to Microsoft’s controversial, media-first strategy with the initial launch of the Xbox One.
