Meta is rolling out First Draft, a new Instagram editing feature designed to streamline short-form video creation by automatically trimming silences and awkward pauses from raw footage.

Users can access the tool immediately after capturing new video or by selecting existing clips from their Reels Gallery and tapping the “First Draft” button. The app automatically analyzes the media, trims quiet gaps, and arranges the edited clips onto a unified timeline. Creators can then make further manual adjustments within Instagram or publish the resulting video directly to their feed or Story.
First Draft follows the April 2025 launch of Edits, Meta’s standalone video production app. Notably, the feature relies on traditional machine learning algorithms rather than generative AI to process audio. This distinguishes First Draft from Meta’s other recent platform additions—such as integrated Meta AI chatbots in direct messages or prompted Story editing—focusing strictly on practical editing utility rather than generative content creation.
