NASA is preparing to launch its next flagship observatory, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, embarking on a mission to investigate the fundamental mysteries of dark energy, dark matter, cosmic gravity, and alien worlds.

The $4-billion (R64-billion) project is scheduled to launch on Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, arriving nine months ahead of its original development timeline. Following separation from the launch vehicle, the telescope will travel to Lagrange Point 2, located approximately 1.6 million kilometres from Earth, joining the James Webb Space Telescope at the gravitationally stable orbital destination.

Building upon the operational legacies of the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes, Roman distinguishes itself through a high-speed, panoramic wide-field view. Its primary survey, scheduled to span more than a year, will map over two billion galaxies to trace how cosmic structures formed and expanded over time. Scientists intend to use this extensive dataset to decipher the nature of dark energy—which is believed to comprise 68% of the universe and drive its accelerating expansion—and dark matter, which constitutes roughly 27%, leaving ordinary matter at just 5%.

By measuring how galaxies cluster and analysing how massive objects bend light through gravitational lensing, researchers also plan to test Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity across billions of light-years. Data from Roman will help determine whether dark energy evolves over time, as suggested by recent findings from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, or whether existing laws of gravity require fundamental revision at cosmological scales.

Beyond cosmological surveys, Roman will conduct one of the most extensive exoplanet searches in astronomical history. With over 6 350 exoplanets identified to date, Roman is expected to discover thousands of additional worlds beyond our solar system while producing the first comprehensive statistical census of planetary systems resembling our own. The spacecraft will also demonstrate advanced technology capable of directly imaging relatively nearby exoplanets, aiding the broader search for potentially habitable environments.

Designed for a primary five-year mission, the observatory carries sufficient fuel reserves to support up to a decade of operational life. Although previous presidential budget proposals attempted to reduce or eliminate funding for the project during Donald Trump’s presidential terms, the United States Congress consistently preserved its financing, allowing development to proceed to launch.

The observatory is named in honour of Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer, who passed away in 2018 at age 93. Renowned as the “Mother of Hubble” for her pivotal role in establishing NASA’s space astronomy program, her namesake telescope now stands ready to revolutionize humanity’s understanding of the cosmos.
