Herotel will introduce Amazon’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband service to South Africa under the brand name Evry, aiming for a commercial launch in 2027. CEO Van Zyl Botha confirmed that Herotel will serve as the importer of record, absorbing foreign currency risks on hardware terminals while maintaining stable retail pricing over an initial three-year period.

Service fees will closely align with Herotel’s current direct-to-consumer fibre tiers, which range from R399 to R1 049 per month, offering hardware choices between a 100Mbit/s Nano antenna and a 300Mbit/s Pro antenna through direct purchases or financing options.
Designed to target underserved rural and non-metro areas rather than competing against urban 5G infrastructure, Evry addresses an estimated local market of 480,000 to 2.4 million premises. Herotel plans to leverage its presence across 100 non-metro towns, utilizing its 1,400 local employees and 600 vehicles to establish a strong early distribution footprint. By handling local sales, installation, and ongoing support directly, Herotel’s wholesale-retail arrangement reinvests revenue into local employment, distinguishing it from direct-to-consumer global models.

The partnership structure also navigates the regulatory hurdles that have stalled competitors such as SpaceX’s Starlink. Because Amazon functions strictly as an upstream wholesale supplier, it requires no independent telecom licenses. Herotel holds all necessary local operating licenses, satisfying ICASA regulations without running into historically disadvantaged ownership compliance barriers.
Globally, Amazon Leo has deployed nearly 400 of its authorized 3,236 satellites, supported by a conditional US Federal Communications Commission waiver that extended its primary constellation deadline to July 2027. While Amazon plans early commercial launches in the US and Europe later this year, South Africa’s rollout timeline remains dependent on global launch schedules progressing throughout 2027.
