Valve finally launches Steam Machine with pricing and specs

Valve has officially opened reservations for its highly anticipated Steam Machine console, revealing a standard architecture alongside a lottery-based system designed to thwart scalpers.

The base Steam Machine features 512GB of storage and is priced at $1,049 for the standalone console. Purchasing it alongside the newly redesigned Steam Controller brings the bundle price to $1,128, a $21 discount on the peripheral, which retails separately for $99. Valve noted that standalone controller orders may face shipping delays extending into 2027, as current production is heavily prioritized for console bundles.

For power users, a 2TB storage tier is available for $1,349 standalone, or $1,428 when bundled with the controller. This premium 2TB version sets itself apart visually, shipping with an alternate red fabric trim and a solid walnut faceplate.

To ensure a fair rollout, Valve is executing a randomized lottery system rather than a traditional first-come, first-served launch. To qualify, users must hold a Steam account in good standing that registered a purchase prior to April 27.

Registration remains open until 1 PM ET on June 25, after which Valve will randomize entries to establish reservation queues and waitlists. Selected accounts in the primary reservation queue will receive purchase invitations beginning June 29.

“A launch that starts at a specific day and time tends to reward bots, people with fast internet connections, and talented gaming fingers,” Valve explained in an official blog post. “By accepting reservation signups over the course of a few days, without any incentive to be first, we’re hoping to take away some of that friction.”

The system operates on separate regional queues covering North America, the UK/EU, and Australia, while Komodo handles distribution in Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Notably, the console will not be shipping to South Korea.

To maintain a strict “Steam Verified” ecosystem—ensuring seamless game compatibility without the fragmentation of traditional PC gaming—all hardware configurations share identical internal processing specs:

  • Processing Power: Semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor (6 Cores / 12 Threads) paired with an AMD RDNA3 graphics solution (28 Compute Units).
  • Memory Architecture: 16GB of DDR5 system RAM alongside 8GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM.
  • Storage Expansion: A built-in microSD slot, making it frictionless to swap game libraries between the Steam Machine and a Steam Deck.

All of this horsepower is tightly packed into a compact cube measuring roughly six inches on each side. For connectivity, the back panel sports two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a single USB-C port, DisplayPort 1.4, and HDMI 2.0. On the wireless front, the console features Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and a dedicated, integrated 2.4GHz internal adapter to ensure lag-free communication with the new Steam Controller.
