The universe of Eve Online is expanding in an unexpected direction. Fenris Creations, the developer formerly known as CCP Games, has announced a strategic partnership with Google, seeing the search giant take a minority stake in the studio. This shift comes on the heels of the developer successfully buying back the rights to the Eve IP from the Korean publisher Pearl Abyss.

The core of this deal involves Google’s DeepMind training its advanced AI models within the complex social and economic ecosystem of Eve Online. According to Fenris Creations CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, Google’s investment reaches “into the millions” of dollars.
While DeepMind has previously conquered arcade classics and StarCraft II, Eve Online represents a significantly higher ceiling for machine learning. DeepMind’s Adrian Bolton noted that the game requires “long-term planning and continual learning”, skills AI has yet to master.
Initially, research will take place on isolated servers to study player behaviour. With over two decades of player-driven history, the game offers a unique sandbox of social simulation:
- Complex Diplomacy: AI will navigate intricate player-run alliances and betrayals.
- Player-Driven Markets: The game’s player-run economy provides a high-stakes environment for financial modelling.
- Social Insights: As Pétursson put it, “The final boss for AI in games would obviously be Eve Online… [It] gives insights about our own society and the human condition.”
The collaboration isn’t solely academic. The companies have teased that the partnership will “explore new gameplay experiences enabled by these technologies.” While details remain vague, the implication is that DeepMind’s tech could eventually power more sophisticated NPCs or dynamic world events.
The rebranding to Fenris Creations marks a new chapter for the studio as it manages an increasingly diverse portfolio within the Eve universe:
- Eve Vanguard: An upcoming FPS-focused spinoff currently in development.
- Eve Galaxy Conquest: A recently launched mobile strategy title.
- Eve Frontier: Formerly known as Project Awakening, this blockchain-based spinoff remains the most controversial and uncertain project in the studio’s lineup.
By reclaiming its independence and securing Google’s backing, the studio is positioning Eve Online not just as a game, but as a premier frontier for the future of artificial intelligence.
