Spotify finally adds universal video toggles

For users who prefer their music streaming app to focus strictly on audio, Spotify is finally introducing a way to cut through the visual clutter. The platform has launched universal video toggles, allowing users to disable the various video formats that have increasingly populated the app over the last several years.

These new settings provide far more precision than the previous “Canvas-only” switch. Within the Content and Display menu under the Settings tab, users will now find three distinct controls to customize their experience. The first is the standard Canvas toggle for short, looping visuals on the Now Playing screen. This is joined by a new switch for Music Videos, which controls full-length official video playback, and a final All Other Videos option that serves as a catch-all for video podcasts, TikTok-style vertical clips, and promotional artist messages.

Once these preferences are selected, they apply universally across all platforms. Furthermore, Family Plan managers now have the authority to toggle these video settings for every member associated with their account.

Spotify’s pivot toward video has been a multi-year journey, beginning with Canvas loops in 2018 and expanding into video podcasts during the 2020 pandemic boom. More recently, the platform added full-length music videos and 30-second vertical “Artist Clips” designed for direct fan engagement. Despite the company’s claim that 70% of users believe more video content enhances their experience, the interface has become increasingly “TikTok-ified.” These new toggles serve as a welcome olive branch to audio-first purists who find the platform’s busy visual interface more distracting than immersive.
