MultiChoice has unveiled a significant retention strategy as it prepares to shutter the Showmax platform on April 30, 2026. In an attempt to migrate its standalone streaming audience, the broadcaster is offering Showmax subscribers DStv Stream Compact for R99/month—a 67% discount on the standard R299/month rate.

Eligible Showmax users will receive a free trial of DStv Stream Compact through the end of May. Following the trial, they can lock in the R99/month promotional rate for a full year. However, there are several caveats to the offer:
- Manual Migration: Transitioning is not automatic. Subscribers must manually sign up for DStv Stream and create a new profile.
- Eligibility: The offer is restricted to direct Showmax subscribers who do not currently have an active DStv contract.
- Payment Discipline: The discount is contingent on an uninterrupted subscription; any payment lapse resets the cost to the standard R299/month.
The steep discount highlights MultiChoice’s concern over subscriber “inertia.” Because the migration requires an active opt-in, the company risks losing a portion of its user base during the transition.
At R99/month, the offer is highly competitive, undercutting Netflix’s Standard plan (R179/month) while providing the distinct advantage of live sports via SuperSport. However, the 12-month limit creates a “pricing cliff” in mid-2027, where subscribers will see their monthly bills triple—a dynamic that traditionally triggers high churn rates.
