Sony launches the WF-1000XM6 in South Africa

Sony has officially launched the latest generation of its flagship audio lineup in South Africa, introducing the WF-1000XM6 truly wireless earbuds alongside a stylish Sand Pink edition of the WH-1000XM6 over-ear headphones. Available locally from 3 April 2026, these releases solidify the 1000X series’ position as the premium benchmark for portable noise cancellation and high-resolution sound.

The WF-1000XM6 brings a claimed 25% improvement in noise reduction over its predecessor. This leap is driven by the new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e, which works in tandem with the Integrated Processor V2. Sony has also increased the microphone count to four per earbud, specifically targeting the suppression of mid-to-high frequency sounds often found in busy South African environments like airports, malls, and public transport.

Rather than relying on static filters, the Adaptive Noise Cancelling Optimiser analyses the acoustic environment and the wearer’s fit in real-time. This is supported by redesigned Noise Isolation Earbud Tips, available in four sizes, to maximize comfort and minimize sound leakage.

To refine the sound profile, Sony collaborated with Grammy-winning engineers like Randy Merrill and Chris Gehringer. The result is an audio experience designed to mirror the artist’s original intent in the mastering room. Technically, the earbuds have jumped from 24-bit to 32-bit processing, utilizing a new driver unit that balances deep bass with extended high frequencies.

For audiophiles, the earbuds support Hi-Res Audio Wireless, DSEE Extreme upscaling, and 360 Reality Audio with head tracking. A customizable 10-band EQ via the Sony Sound Connect app allows users to fine-tune their listening experience, making these much more than simple commuter tools.

Recognizing the needs of hybrid professionals, Sony has equipped the WF-1000XM6 with two microphones and a bone conduction sensor per earbud. Supported by AI-driven beamforming, this system isolates the user’s voice from ambient chaos, ensuring crystal-clear call quality.

Stability is also improved via a redesigned antenna that is 1.5 times larger than previous models, while LE Audio support provides ultra-low latency for gaming and video. Battery life remains robust at eight hours per charge (24 hours total with the case), and the inclusion of Qi wireless charging meets modern premium standards.

The earbuds integrate natively with Google Gemini, allowing South African users to manage tasks and reminders via hands-free voice commands. Sony is also emphasizing its “circular” approach; approximately 25% of the plastics used are recycled materials, and the packaging is entirely plastic-free.

While the WF-1000XM6 features a slimmer, more ergonomic design, the over-ear WH-1000XM6 gains a new aesthetic edge with the Sand Pink colourway, joining Black, Platinum Silver, and Midnight Blue.
