Barentu, 31 January 2025 – The Gash Barka Region branch of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare reported that over 12.5 million Nakfa was disbursed in 2024 to support disadvantaged citizens, including families of martyrs and disabled individuals. The report was presented at an activity assessment meeting held on 30 January in Barentu.
It was noted at the meeting that contributions from Government employees and Diaspora nationals were also distributed to relevant families.
Mr. Tesfagebriel Gebreselasie, acting head of the branch office, highlighted the significant role played by Government institutions and the community in implementing these support programs. He emphasized that community-based initiatives supporting families of martyrs, eradicating harmful practices, and rehabilitating disabled citizens will remain priority tasks for 2025.
Ambassador Mahmud Ali Hirui, Governor of the region, called for the organization of vocational training programs to improve livelihoods of nationals, the implementation of measurable effort to eradicate harmful practices, and active participation by local administrations in these efforts.
Ms. Leul Gebreab, Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, urged all Government and public institutions to adhere to labor laws while considering the current socio-economic context. She also emphasized the need to prioritize human resources development.
