The cast of “Wicked” has been promoting the film ahead of its November 22 release. Many of the stars’ looks nod to the film, whether through color scheme or tone.Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s green and pink looks celebrating the film have stood out.
Are people born stylish? Or do they have style thrust upon them?
That is the question musical theater fans have been asking themselves while tuning into the press tour for the “Wicked” movie, which is set to premiere worldwide on November 22.
Much of the “Wicked” cast has been “method dressing” throughout the film’s press tour, wearing outfits that nod to themes or plot points in the movie. Actors like Zendaya and Margot Robbie popularized the practice in recent years to drum up excitement for their films ahead of their release.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s themed outfits have been the most eye-catching of the cast. Still, other actors like Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum have also nodded to their characters with their recent outfits.
Take a look at the best “Wicked“-inspired looks from the film’s press tour, ranked from least to most on theme.

Erivo attended WSJ Magazine’s Innovator Awards on October 29, where “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu was given the Innovator Award for film.
Her Erdem outfit was highly fashionable, featuring a gray pinstripe pantsuit beneath a tattered green dress. The latter piece was also embellished across its bodice with sparkling crystals.
But while the outfit would have been perfect for New York Fashion Week, it wasn’t as strongly tied to Erivo’s role as Elphaba in “Wicked.”

She sported a strapless design from Vivienne Westwood, which had a corseted bodice and a short tutu skirt with a longer lace overlay.
Grande then accessorized the look with pointed Gianvito Rossi heels and statement Swarovski jewelry.
The ensemble was feminine and frilly, mirroring Glinda’s sparkling style. However, the white color of her gown made the outfit look a little too bridal.

Erivo and Grande wore some of their most casual promo looks for a “Wicked” screening in New York City on October 28.
The Elphaba actor arrived in ankle-cut jeans, a white T-shirt, shiny green heels, and a printed overcoat — all from Louis Vuitton.
Grande, who plays Glinda, sported a white vest and midi skirt from Versace, complete with pointed heels and elbow-length gloves in the same color.
Both actors looked chic, but neither outfit was super memorable or in character.

He arrived at the Australian event in a black blouse from Giuliva Heritage. The top was classic thanks to its long sleeves and collar but also edgy due to its sheer material.
His pleated shorts, on the other hand, didn’t pair well with his flat loafers. A pair of boots, platform loafers, or even high-top sneakers would have better suited his getup.
And by wearing all black, Bailey also strayed a bit from the fashion of his character.

Bode plays Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister, in “Wicked.” The color of her teal, strapless dress from Prabal Gurung looked like a relative to the deeper green Elphaba often wears in the production, so it was a fitting look for Bode to bring out on the red carpet.
The dress had a fitted waist, long skirt, and crystal lining across its neckline, perfectly matching her silver pointed shoes.
And for just a touch more green, Bode’s makeup artist added vibrant shadow to the inner corners of her eyes.

He walked the red carpet, or yellow brick road in this case, wearing a classic black suit and shining dress shoes.
It was the outfit’s bottom layer — a light-gray button-up with a darker gray tie — that seemingly nodded to the franchise’s classic Tin Man character.

Her AKNVAS gown was sleeveless with a V-neckline, long skirt, and thigh-high slit. Its off-yellow fabric — which may have been a nod to the yellow brick road — was also covered entirely with shining paillettes, adding glamour to the otherwise simple look.
Bode also looked glamorous on the red carpet thanks to her sparkling jewelry, neutral makeup, and updo hairstyle.

Goldblum got into character with a deep-green Prada ensemble. The custom outfit included a blazer-style coat, skinny trousers, and a seafoam blouse with ruffles down the front.
The Wizard actor completed his outfit with black nail polish, green-tinted sunglasses, and Cartier jewels.

She made a major statement on the event’s black carpet in a long-sleeved gown that glimmered as she walked.
The Balenciaga design was covered from top to bottom in silver sparkles, and its long sleeves were ripped to match the same tears that lined its bodice.
But Yeoh didn’t stop there. She also wore a thick diamond necklace and styled her hair in a blonde bob. The actor was almost unrecognizable in photographs.

You can’t get more “Wicked” than wearing a green velvet suit, so that’s exactly what Ethan Slater did. His version was designed by Thom Browne and featured thick lapels and a plaid lining inside.
Slater also kept the look classic by pairing it with simple dress shoes and a black bow tie.

Bailey attended the Australia premiere of “Wicked” in a cream suit from Dolce & Gabbana. His jacket and high-waisted pants had a subtle sheen, complementing his silky yellow top, which matched the yellow brick road.
Bailey also added sunglasses to his ensemble for a chic, modern touch.

Grande arrived at the photo-call in a custom Bode set consisting of a strapless cropped top and a dropped-waist skirt.
The top featured crisscrossed strips of pink fabric cinched in bows in the center of Grande’s chest. It coordinated with the full pink skirt, which featured ruching on the waistline and a tea-length hem.
Her white pointed-toe Manolo Blahnik heels also had bows on the toes.
From the pink color and bow detailing to the feminine silhouette, Grande’s ensemble looked like a modern take on the pink ball gowns Glinda favors.

Erivo went into Marc Jacobs’ archives for the same photo-call, wearing a green top and black skirt from the brand’s 2011 ready-to-wear collection.
The top and skirt were embroidered with black lace detailing, giving the ensemble a gothic feel. Her top’s curved neckline gave way to long sleeves, which featured white-and-black cuffs that matched the hat Erivo paired with the ensemble.
Erivo completed the look with platform black boots that offered a twist on the lace-up boots Elphaba wears in “Wicked” and a green textured manicure.

He wore a silver, sparkling blouse with rolled-up sleeves and an unbuttoned top that mirrored the Tin Man’s metallic appearance. He also sported a poppy flower pinned to the top — a sweet nod to the famous flower scene in “The Wizard of Oz.”
But his homages to the Oz franchise didn’t stop there.
Beneath his white trousers, Bailey also sported patent-leather loafers that were identical in color to Dorothy’s ruby-red slippers from “The Wizard of Oz.”

Goldblum’s custom Loewe ensemble included brown trousers and a coordinating jacket with tails that flowed to the floor, acting as a train.
A swath of gold fabric adorned one of Goldblum’s lapels, and his shirt was silky green aside from its white collar. He also wore sunglasses with the look, as he is known to do on red carpets.
The Wizard is often depicted in green suits in both “Wicked” and “The Wizard of Oz,” so Goldblum’s chic take on his style struck the perfect tone for the premiere.

Erivo and Grande attended the Olympics Opening Ceremonies in Paris in July, and they used the event to informally kick off their parade of green and pink looks for the “Wicked” press tour.
Both chose chic monochrome dresses for the occasion.
Louis Vuitton designed Erivo’s strapless, emerald dress, featuring a tea-length skirt with volume at the waist. Her wide-brimmed hat and pointed-toe shoes were also green.
Grande’s Thom Browne dress was also tea-length, though it had a high neckline and a dropped waist with a bow. She accessorized the look with a pink bow in her hair, pink gloves, and pink and white shoes.
The stars’ looks complemented each other, signaling that “Wicked” season was coming.

Erivo surprised fans by arriving at the Australia premiere in a black dress reminiscent of the clothes Elphaba wears in “Wicked” instead of continuing her streak of green looks.
Louis Vuitton designed Erivo’s strapless gown, which hugged her figure and featured voluminous fabric around her hips that cascaded down and into a train.
“It reminds me of wings and defying gravity,” Erivo told Vogue of the gown.
An oversized choker and green nails tied Erivo’s look together.

Grande selected another Thom Browne dress — which featured a pink-and-white gingham pattern — for the Los Angeles premiere of “Wicked.”
The gown had a strapless, form-fitting bodice and an exaggerated full skirt that hit just below her knee and trailed slightly lower in the back. Grande wore a coordinating shrug, gloves, and a bow for her hair.
The outfit’s color nodded to Glinda, but the pattern and silhouette seemed like a chic version of the checked dress Dorothy traditionally wears in “The Wizard of Oz.”
Grande also honored the film with her sparkly silver heels, an iconic element of the “Wicked” musical and book, though they are red in “The Wizard of Oz.”

Erivo donned another Louis Vuitton look for the Los Angeles premiere of “Wicked.”
Her form-fitting latex dress had spaghetti straps and a pointed neckline, which mirrored the triangular cutout on the center of the bodice. The skirt fell to the floor, as did the feathered cape she wore wrapped around her shoulders.
Roberto Coin jewelry completed her look, including a diamond choker with an emerald in the center.
The ensemble combined Hollywood glamour with the spirit of “Wicked.”

Grande arrived at the Australian premiere of “Wicked” in a custom Vivienne Westwood gown.
The dress was inspired by Glinda’s dress in “The Wizard of Oz,” as it featured the same ball-gown silhouette and puffy sleeves from the film. But Westwood put a high-fashion spin on the garment with a soft-pink base and an overlay of fabric adorned with star-shaped embellishments on the bodice and sleeves.
Ruffles provided texture and volume to the skirt, which flowed into a small train behind Grande. She further elevated the look with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, including a diamond choker with a butterfly.
Grande fully stepped into her role as Glinda on the red carpet in the custom gown, setting the tone for the film’s promotion.
