Remarks by H.E. Osman Saleh, Foreign Minister of the State of Eritrea “THE COST OF INACTION: Urgent and Collective Support to Scale Up the Humanitarian Response in Sudan and the Region” 25 September 2024, New York

Excellencies,

Distinguished Delegates,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Eritrea extends its deep appreciation to the organizers of this important meeting on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. We are gathered today to address a situation of immense gravity, one that has had devastating consequences for the people of Sudan and, indeed, for the entire region.

The ongoing conflict has caused the death of thousands, displaced millions, disrupted livelihoods, and led to severe food and health insecurities. The humanitarian needs are dire, and it is incumbent upon us to respond with the urgency and care that this situation demands.

Eritrea stands in full solidarity with the people of Sudan during this challenging time. It has been actively engaged in efforts to assist Sudan and the Sudanese people, particularly in promoting peace and stability in the region.

With the limited resources, the people and government of Eritrea have shown solidarity with Sudanese refugees by offering them protection and support within our borders.

As part the diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching to a permanent ceasefire and curbing the humanitarian suffering, Eritrea has been coordinating with the relevant stakeholders and participating in regional initiatives. Eritrea continues to advocate for a Sudanese owned inclusive peace process, supported by neighboring countries. In this regard, Eritrea has been also engaged with various Sudanese and UN delegations, including Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, Personal Envoy of the UNSG for Sudan, in Asmara. We stress that the various initiatives need to be coordinated and serious engagements should create an enabling environment.

Excellencies,

The situation in Sudan demands a swift and collective action. Ending the conflict is paramount to halting the devastation, displacement, and suffering of the Sudanese people. Now is the time to mobilize the political, financial and technical support needed to overcome operational challenges and provide the urgent protection and aid required.

Only through sustained, flexible funding and international solidarity can we avert the worst and restore hope to the people of Sudan.

I Thank You!
